It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes and/or at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

Beyond this, every day should be spirit day. That means speaking out against intolerance and bigotry, and that means voting against anti-GLBTQ legislation and politicians.

This is so sad! :( It's kind of a shocker to me in this day and age, since I went to school with many gay and lesbian students who were, as far as I know, just as accepted as any other students. It was kinda "cool" to be gay/bi in my high school.

Breaks my heart.

Also - purple is the awareness color for pancreas cancer!

My male, redneck acquaintances have learned rather quickly NOT to speak of such hatred around me.. I generally chew them a new hole if they do.

Interestingly the acting out insane closet cases in my high school all got bullied a lot less once they came out, and suddenly had a lot more friends. And after graduation it ceased to be an issue, except for the occasional disappointment when people wanted someone who was batting for the other team.

Then again I went to schools where being stupid was a uch worse crime than sexuality.
